Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much is a travel consultation?

The doctor consultation varies in price from $88 – $140. Fees for all doctor consultations are priced in accordance with Medicare/AMA/RACGP standards and the complexity of your particular consultation. There are strict consultation guidelines that all our doctors are determined to uphold.

  • If I need a follow up consultation with a doctor about my trip, how much will that cost?

Follow up consultations at CBD Doctors Melbourne are Bulk Billed by convention. Should there be any additional issues to address there will be a standard consultation fee applied.

  • Can I get any money back through a Medicare rebate?

Only a part of the doctor consultation is Medicare rebate-able. Currently the benefit is $37.05 for a standard and $71.70 for an extended consultation.

  • How much are the vaccinations going to cost me?

General travel vaccinations vary in price from $35 – $320 each.

  • Is travel health covered by Medicare?

If travel is for personal reasons, Medicare will rebate some of the consultation fee. Medicare rebates are not payable for travel that is undertaken for work-related purposes, nor can Medicare be accessed for costs associated with medical assessments of suitability to travel.

  • If I come with a family member, is the consultation price the same?

The consultation price is per person per service, regardless of whether you go into the consultation together. This is because vaccines are prescribed per person, depending on individual medical history and risk.

  • Can I claim any of the travel vaccination/consultation costs through my private health insurance?

If you have the appropriate level of cover you may be able to claim a rebate through your private health insurance. Due to the number of providers in private health insurance we are unable to process any of these claims. After processing your Medicare benefits, we will provide you with the required paperwork to make your claim with your insurer.

  • What vaccines do I need?

The doctor will advise what vaccinations are required during your consultation based on your itinerary and activity while you are away. Some consultation about your general medical history may also be necessary if we are not your regular GP. If any of your questions have not been answered, feel free to submit a question to a member of our team through our contact form or give one of our staff a call now.

  • Do I need a prescription for the vaccination(s)?

The doctor will prescribe you only the vaccinations that are required or relevant to your trip, although you are free to decline our recommendations. You will be made aware of the approximate cost of the vaccinations and any side effects that may follow.

  • How long does it take for the vaccines to be administered after I get my prescription?

At CBD Doctors Melbourne, a specialized travel clinic, we have the ability to stock all common vaccines on-site. So once you have your prescription(s), we can generally take action immediately.

  • Will vaccines weaken my immune system?

Studies have shown absolutely no evidence for any general ‘weakening’ of the immune system. The amounts of exposure are very specific, tested and deemed safe over a long period of time. The vaccines are prescribed to mitigate the risk of severe infection with a milder test than is commonly managed by our immune system on a daily basis.

  • How long do vaccinations last?

Most vaccinations last between a year and a lifetime, but this varies between each. We’ve constructed a table below that outlines the length of protection a vaccination provides after its course is completed.

    Cholera (oral)2 years
    Diptheria10 years
