What is lifestyle medicine?

Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based field of medicine that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as the primary means of preventing, treating, and often reversing chronic disease.

“Lifestyle medicine is the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches — including a whole food, plant-predominant eating pattern, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and positive social connection — as a primary therapeutic approach.”

It is not alternative medicine. It is not a wellness trend. It is a recognised medical discipline, with its own professional body in Australia (the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine), a growing body of peer-reviewed evidence, and a set of new national clinical guidelines published in late 2025 — the most significant update to Australian lifestyle medicine protocols in over five years.

What makes lifestyle medicine different from conventional GP care isn’t that it replaces medication or treatment — it’s that it addresses the upstream factors that medication alone cannot fix. A prescription for blood pressure tablets manages blood pressure. Understanding why it’s elevated — poor sleep, chronic stress, inactivity, dietary patterns — and addressing those factors changes the underlying trajectory.

The six pillars of lifestyle medicine are:

  1. Nutrition — a whole food, predominantly plant-based dietary pattern that reduces inflammation, improves metabolic function, and reduces cardiovascular and cancer risk
  2. Physical activity — both structured exercise and incidental movement throughout the day, tailored to the individual’s capacity, goals, and any musculoskeletal limitations
  3. Sleep — restorative sleep is foundational to metabolic health, immune function, cognitive performance, weight regulation, and mood
  4. Stress management — chronic psychological stress is a significant driver of cardiovascular disease, immune dysfunction, weight gain, and mental health conditions
  5. Risky substance avoidance — evidence-based support for reducing or eliminating tobacco, alcohol, and other substances that drive chronic disease
  6. Social connection — social isolation is now recognised as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, dementia, and premature mortality comparable in magnitude to smoking

A GP practising lifestyle medicine addresses all six pillars as part of a whole-person clinical assessment — not as an afterthought, but as core to the consultation.

Why does this matter for people living and working in Melbourne’s CBD?

Melbourne’s inner suburbs — the CBD, Southbank, Docklands, Carlton, Fitzroy, and East Melbourne — are home to a particular kind of patient. Professionals in demanding roles. Long hours. High stress. Commuter schedules that make structured exercise difficult. The desk, the laptop, the lunch grabbed between meetings.

The lifestyle risk factors that drive chronic disease don’t care about income or education level. They show up in the bloodwork of lawyers in the CBD just as readily as in any other population. They show up as back pain from a desk that’s slightly wrong for a body that sits in it for ten hours a day. They show up as fatigue that doesn’t resolve with a weekend, anxiety that hums at a low level all the time, and weight that’s gradually shifted over five years of the same habits.

A GP who takes a lifestyle medicine approach asks different questions than a standard ten-minute appointment allows. Not just “what are your symptoms” but “what does your day actually look like? How are you sleeping? What are you eating? What’s your stress like?” And crucially — “what’s realistic for you to change, given your actual life?”

That contextual, whole-person approach is what makes lifestyle medicine particularly relevant for busy Melbourne CBD professionals who need practical, workable health guidance — not generic advice that doesn’t fit their reality.

Introducing Dr Taz Akkireddi — Now Consulting at CBD Doctors Melbourne

We’re thrilled to welcome Dr Taz Akkireddi to the CBD Doctors Melbourne team. Dr Taz is now consulting at Level 10, 53 Queen Street and is accepting new patients from across Melbourne CBD, Southbank, Docklands, Carlton, Fitzroy, East Melbourne, and surrounding inner suburbs.

Dr Taz grew up with a genuine love of sport and movement — something that led him, unusually, to train as both a physiotherapist and a medical doctor. After completing his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame in Perth, he spent several years working across Western Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory, and New South Wales — building broad clinical experience across diverse patient populations and settings before returning to Melbourne. (His other reason for coming back: the Carlton Football Club.)

His special interests include sports and musculoskeletal medicine, orthopaedics, back pain, lifestyle medicine, men’s health, and sexual health including PrEP prescribing. He consults across all areas of general practice and warmly welcomes patients of all ages and backgrounds.

What makes Dr Taz different:

That dual background — medicine and physiotherapy — is genuinely rare among GPs, and it shapes his consultations in ways that matter for patients. When you come in with back pain, Dr Taz isn’t just assessing whether you need a referral. He’s assessing your posture, your movement patterns, the relationship between your physical symptoms and your lifestyle, your sleep quality, and whether what you do every day is contributing to the problem or protecting against it. He can recommend specific, targeted physical interventions alongside medical management — and he knows exactly when physio is the right next step and what to tell them when you go.

His lifestyle medicine interest means consultations are genuinely whole-person. If you come to Dr Taz with high cholesterol, you won’t just leave with a statin prescription — you’ll also leave with a clear, evidence-based understanding of what dietary and lifestyle changes are realistic for your actual life.

Dr Taz is now accepting new patients. Same-day appointments are available. Book online.

Who benefits most from a lifestyle medicine approach?

A lifestyle medicine-oriented GP consultation is particularly valuable for:

  • People with chronic conditions Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, chronic pain, and inflammatory conditions all have significant lifestyle components. A lifestyle medicine approach doesn’t replace medical treatment for these conditions — it addresses the factors that drive them and can, over time, reduce medication burden and improve quality of life.
  • People who want to prevent chronic disease If your family history includes heart disease, diabetes, or cancer — or if your blood results are trending in a concerning direction without yet crossing clinical thresholds — lifestyle medicine is exactly the right intervention. The research is unambiguous: diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management are the most powerful tools available for primary prevention.
  • People with musculoskeletal or back pain Back pain is the leading cause of disability globally, and it’s one of the conditions most responsive to lifestyle intervention — particularly exercise, sleep, and stress management. Dr Taz’s physiotherapy background makes him particularly well placed to assess and manage back pain and musculoskeletal conditions within a whole-person framework.
  • CBD professionals with lifestyle-driven health concerns Fatigue, weight gain, poor sleep, stress-related symptoms, and the early signs of metabolic syndrome are common presentations among inner Melbourne’s professional population. A GP who takes lifestyle factors seriously — and has the consultation time and clinical depth to explore them — is exactly what this population needs and rarely finds.
  • People who want a GP who asks why The most common feedback patients give about lifestyle medicine GPs is that they feel genuinely heard. The questions are different. The conversation goes deeper. The plan that comes out of it is personalised to their actual life, not generic advice from a clinical guideline.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between lifestyle medicine and general practice? Lifestyle medicine is a complement to general practice, not a replacement. A GP with a lifestyle medicine interest provides the same clinical care as any other GP — prescriptions, referrals, chronic disease management — but places particular emphasis on understanding and addressing the lifestyle factors that drive health and disease. At CBD Doctors Melbourne, Dr Taz integrates lifestyle medicine principles into his general practice consultations.

Is lifestyle medicine covered by Medicare? Yes. Lifestyle medicine consultations with a GP at CBD Doctors Melbourne are billed as standard GP consultations and attract a Medicare rebate. A Chronic Disease Management Plan (which can include referrals to exercise physiologists, dietitians, and other allied health providers) is also Medicare-funded and can be initiated by your GP.

Do I need a referral to see Dr Taz at CBD Doctors Melbourne? No. You can book directly with Dr Taz at CBD Doctors Melbourne — no referral required. Book online. Same-day appointments are available.

Can Dr Taz help with back pain and musculoskeletal issues? Yes. Dr Taz has dual qualifications in medicine and physiotherapy, with special interests in sports and musculoskeletal medicine, orthopaedics, and back pain. His background gives him a clinical depth in assessing and managing musculoskeletal conditions that most GPs do not have.

Is lifestyle medicine suitable for people who aren’t sick? Absolutely. Preventive care — addressing lifestyle risk factors before chronic disease develops — is one of the strongest applications of lifestyle medicine. If you are healthy but want to stay that way, or if your blood results are trending in a concerning direction, a lifestyle medicine-oriented GP consultation is exactly the right investment.
