Same-day appointments available, Monday to Friday

We serve men from across inner Melbourne including the CBD, Southbank, Docklands, Carlton, Fitzroy, East Melbourne, North Melbourne and anyone visiting the city be it for work or leisure.

Why men’s health matters — and why men don’t seek it

Australian men live, on average, 4.2 years less than women. The leading causes of death among Australian men — cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer, bowel cancer, type 2 diabetes, and suicide — are all conditions where early detection and management significantly improve outcomes. Yet men visit their GP far less frequently than women, and many serious conditions are diagnosed later than they should be.

The reasons are well documented: men are less likely to recognise symptoms as serious, more likely to dismiss discomfort as normal, and often reluctant to discuss sensitive health matters. At CBD Doctors Melbourne, our GPs understand this — and provide a straightforward, practical, no-fuss approach to men’s health that makes getting checked as easy as possible.

You don’t need to be sick to book an appointment. Prevention is the most effective form of men’s health care.

Men’s health checks — what’s included

A men’s health check at CBD Doctors Melbourne is a comprehensive assessment of your current health and risk factors. It’s available to any man, at any age — though the content is tailored based on your age, family history, and individual circumstances.

A standard men’s health check may include:

Cardiovascular risk assessment Blood pressure measurement, cholesterol and lipid panel, fasting blood glucose, HbA1C (diabetes screening) and, BMI and waist circumference, and assessment of your 5 and 10-year cardiovascular risk. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Australian men — and most risk factors are silent until something goes wrong.

Cancer screening

  • Prostate cancer: PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test and prostate assessment. Recommended from age 50 for average-risk men, or from age 40–45 for men with a family history. Your GP will discuss the benefits and limitations of PSA testing before ordering.
  • Bowel cancer: Discussion of National Bowel Cancer Screening Program eligibility and faecal occult blood testing (FOBT). 1 in 11 Australian men will develop bowel cancer — most cases are preventable or curable when caught early.
  • Skin cancer: Full skin examination Australian men over 50 have the highest rate of melanoma of any demographic. More on this below.
  • Testicular cancer: Primarily a cancer of younger men (20–40). Your GP can discuss self-examination and assess any concerns.

Metabolic and hormonal screening Full blood count, kidney and liver function, thyroid function, iron studies, vitamin D, and testosterone levels where indicated.

Mental health screening Using validated screening tools (K10) where appropriate. Men are significantly less likely to seek mental health support than women, yet account for three quarters of suicide deaths in Australia. Your GP will ask — and it’s worth answering honestly.

Lifestyle review Alcohol intake, smoking status, physical activity, sleep quality, and diet — all of which significantly affect long-term health outcomes and are worth discussing openly.

Prostate health — checks, PSA testing, and what to expect

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men, with approximately 1 in 6 men diagnosed in their lifetime. It is also one of the most treatable cancers when detected early.

There is no single definitive screening test for prostate cancer, which is why the conversation with your GP matters. At CBD Doctors Melbourne, the GPs will:

  • Discuss your personal and family risk factors
  • Explain the PSA blood test — what it measures, what elevated levels can mean, and its limitations
  • Discuss whether a digital rectal examination is appropriate for your situation
  • Refer to a urologist if results warrant further investigation

When should men start prostate checks?

Please note: the recommendations changed recently

  • Average risk (no family history): discussion from age 50
  • Family history of prostate cancer (father or brother): discussion from age 40–45
  • African heritage: increased risk — consider discussion from age 40

If you’ve been putting off a prostate check because it sounds uncomfortable or because you feel fine — this is exactly the conversation worth having. Early prostate cancer almost always has no symptoms.

Testosterone — low T, symptoms, and treatment

Low testosterone (hypogonadism) is more common than most men realise, and its symptoms are frequently misattributed to stress, poor sleep, or simply “getting older.”

Symptoms of low testosterone

  • Fatigue and low energy despite adequate sleep
  • Reduced libido (sex drive)
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Loss of muscle mass or difficulty building muscle despite exercise
  • Increased body fat, particularly around the abdomen
  • Mood changes — irritability, low motivation, low mood
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Reduced body and facial hair
  • Poor sleep quality

How testosterone is assessed at CBD Doctors Melbourne

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, your GP will arrange a morning blood test to measure total and free testosterone levels, along with other hormones (LH, FSH) and a full metabolic panel to rule out other causes. Testosterone levels naturally fluctuate, so two measurements on separate mornings are usually needed before a diagnosis is made.

Testosterone replacement therapy

(Replacement therapy must be approved by a specialist- either endocrinologist or urologist)

If low testosterone is confirmed and symptomatic, your GP will discuss treatment options including:

  • Topical testosterone gel (most commonly prescribed in Australia — applied daily to the skin)
  • Testosterone injections (longer-acting, less frequent — every 10–14 weeks for some formulations)
  • Testosterone patches (less commonly used)

Treatment is monitored with regular blood tests and clinical review. Your GP will discuss the benefits, risks, and monitoring requirements before commencing any treatment.

Erectile dysfunction — a common condition worth talking about

Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects an estimated 1 in 5 Australian men over 40 — and that figure increases significantly with age. Despite being one of the most common men’s health concerns, it remains one of the most under-discussed.

ED is not simply a sexual health issue. It is often the first clinical sign of underlying cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or hormonal imbalance. It could also be connected with anxiety and relationship difficulties. A man with new-onset ED deserves a thorough GP assessment — not just a prescription.

At CBD Doctors Melbourne, the GPs assess ED as part of a whole-health picture:

  • Full history including onset, severity, and any relationship or psychological factors
  • Blood tests: blood glucose, lipid panel, thyroid
  • Blood pressure and cardiovascular risk assessment
  • Medication review (many common medications cause or worsen ED)
  • Discussion of treatment options

Treatment options for erectile dysfunction

Oral medications (PDE5 inhibitors) Sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil are effective for most men with ED. Your GP can prescribe these and advise on the appropriate dose and timing. These medications require a prescription in Australia and should not be purchased from unregulated online sources.

Lifestyle modifications Cardiovascular fitness, weight management, reducing alcohol intake, and stopping smoking all improve erectile function significantly. For many men, these changes alone make a meaningful difference.

Psychological support Where anxiety, performance pressure, or relationship factors are contributing, a Mental Health Care Plan and referral to psychology can be highly effective alongside or instead of medication.

Specialist referral If first-line treatments are unsuccessful or if underlying conditions require specialist management, your GP will refer to a urologist or endocrinologist as appropriate.

There is no reason to manage ED alone or to assume it’s simply part of ageing. Book a confidential appointment with one of the GPs.

Men’s mental health

Men account for approximately three quarters of all suicide deaths in Australia. Despite this, men are significantly less likely than women to seek help for mental health concerns — often because of stigma, the perception that mental health issues are a sign of weakness, or simply not knowing where to start.

At CBD Doctors Melbourne, our GPs provide a practical, non-judgmental starting point for men’s mental health. A GP appointment is the right first step — whether that means:

  • A Mental Health Care Plan giving you access to up to 10 subsidised psychology sessions under Medicare
  • GP management of anxiety or depression with or without medication
  • ADHD assessment and referral (adult ADHD is significantly underdiagnosed in men)
  • Referral to our in-house clinical psychology team
  • Referral to a psychiatrist for more complex presentations

You don’t need to be in crisis to ask for help. If you’ve been feeling flat, stressed, unmotivated, or unlike yourself — that’s worth a conversation.

Skin checks for men

Australian men over 50 have the highest rate of melanoma of any demographic in the country. Men are also less likely to notice or act on suspicious skin lesions — and more likely to present with advanced disease as a result.

A full skin check at CBD Doctors Melbourne includes:

  • Head-to-toe examination of all skin surfaces
  • Dermoscopy (magnified examination of suspicious lesions)
  • Mole mapping
  • Documentation of concerning lesions
  • Biopsy or referral for lesions requiring further assessment
  • Sun protection and self-examination advice

A skin check takes approximately 20–30 minutes and requires no preparation. Men who work or have worked outdoors, have a history of sunburn, or have a family history of melanoma should have annual skin checks. A skin check can be combined with a men’s health check in the same appointment.

Sexual health for men

CBD Doctors Melbourne provides comprehensive sexual health services for men in a confidential, non-judgmental environment:

  • STI testing — including our Point of Care PCR testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea with results in as little as 30 minutes, plus comprehensive screens for syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and C
  • HIV testing — including rapid testing where appropriate
  • PrEP prescribing and management — Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV prevention, available directly from a GP without specialist referral
  • HPV vaccination — recommended for men who have sex with men, and available to all men up to age 26 (and on a case-by-case basis beyond this)
  • Erectile dysfunction — covered in detail above
  • Sexual dysfunction — including reduced libido, ejaculatory concerns, and performance anxiety

Men’s health and weight management

Abdominal weight gain — particularly the accumulation of visceral fat around the organs — is one of the most significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in men. It is also directly linked to low testosterone and erectile dysfunction.

At CBD Doctors Melbourne, the GPs take a whole-health approach to weight management for men, including:

  • Metabolic assessment and cardiovascular risk profiling
  • Lifestyle and dietary review with practical, evidence-based advice
  • Medical weight loss support including GLP-1 receptor agonist prescribing where appropriate
  • Hormonal assessment — particularly thyroid, and insulin resistance
  • Referral to our in-house dietitian or exercise physiologist where indicated

Vasectomy — referral and information

Vasectomy is one of the most effective and permanent forms of contraception available to men, with a failure rate of less than 0.1%. While CBD Doctors Melbourne does not perform vasectomies on-site, our GPs can:

  • Discuss vasectomy as a contraceptive option and answer your questions
  • Confirm your suitability for the procedure
  • Provide a referral to an experienced vasectomy provider in Melbourne CBD
  • Manage any post-procedure concerns or complications

If you’re considering a vasectomy, a GP consultation is the right first step — both to confirm it’s the right choice for your circumstances and to ensure you receive a referral to a reputable provider.

Men’s health by age — what to prioritise

Men’s health needs change significantly across different life stages. Here’s a general guide to what your GP will focus on at each stage — though individual circumstances always take priority.

In your 20s and 30s: Mental health, sexual health (STI screening, PrEP), testicular health, skin checks, establishing baseline bloods, lifestyle habits (alcohol, sleep, exercise, diet), vaccination status.

In your 40s: Cardiovascular risk assessment becomes priority — blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, BMI. Prostate health discussion begins (earlier with family history). Testosterone assessment if symptomatic. Mental health. Skin checks annually.

In your 50s: Prostate checks (PSA), bowel cancer screening, cardiovascular monitoring, diabetes management if indicated, testosterone, erectile function, mental health, annual skin checks, hearing and vision checks.

In your 60s and beyond: All of the above, plus bone density assessment, falls prevention, medication reviews, chronic disease management, and cognitive health.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to see a male GP for a men’s health appointment? No — all of the GPs, male and female, are experienced in men’s health. Some men prefer to see a male GP for certain concerns, particularly sexual health or prostate checks. If you have a preference, please let our reception team know when booking and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

How long does a men’s health check take? A comprehensive men’s health check typically takes 30–45 minutes. A longer appointment may be needed if blood tests are ordered on the day. If you’re combining a men’s health check with a skin check, allow 45–60 minutes.

Do I need to fast before my appointment? If a fasting blood glucose or fasting lipid panel is planned, you’ll need to fast for 8–10 hours before your blood test. Water is fine. The doctor can advise you when you book.

Is a men’s health check bulk billed? CBD Doctors Melbourne private billing practice. A Medicare rebate applies to GP consultations being on length and complexity of issues discussed.

I’ve been having symptoms but I’m not sure they’re worth mentioning — should I bring them up? Yes. Always. The things men most commonly dismiss as “not worth mentioning” — fatigue, low mood, changes in sexual function, skin lesions — are often the most clinically important. Our GPs will not rush you and will not make you feel like you’re wasting their time.

Can I get a blood test at the same appointment? Blood tests are referred to an external pathology provider. Your GP will give you a request form at your appointment, and you can attend Australian Clinical Labs collection centre local on our floor at level 10, 53 Queen Street. Results typically return within 24–48 hours. Please give a call 2 days after you have provided your sample and the nurse will let you know if a follow up is required. Follows up are only required if there is something to discuss with the doctor or if further treatment is required.
