Until a few years ago, the heterosexual population was considered a low-risk group for blood born infections, like HIV, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B, syphilis.Congenital syphilis was rare and many of doctors didn’t see it in their lifetime.
In 2024 however there is no low-risk group anymore. Sexuality doesn’t determine a lower of higher risk, when we are talking about recommendation for STI testing.
Current STI (sexually transmitted infections) investigation (testing) recommendations:
- At CBD Doctors Melbourne, we will test anyone that requests a STI test
- People with a new sexual partner including people who travel overseas
- Anyone who had STI in last year
- Anyone who had sex with a person with an infection
- Men who have sex with men (MSM)
- Sex worker
- Transgender people and their partners
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
We will order ALL necessary tests.
There is evidence that people who have one STI are at risk of having another STI (sexually transmitted disease)
What we will test for:
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea (urine, swabs- throat and anal)
- Blood born infections (HIV syphilis Hepatitis B and C, syphilis)
- Please note will not offer routine test on mycoplasma genitalium, only to specific conditions and specific symptoms.
What happens if you test positive to any of these sexually transmitted diseases?
- You will need another appointment with your doctor.
- A doctor will prescribe you a treatment. We have injections on site.
- A doctor will talk to you about requirements for testing your partner/s, about notifying any partner and contact chasing.
- There is NO CURRENT RECOMMENDATION TO TREAT A PARTNER however your partner may require testing.
